I was browsing the interwebs and a stupid video popped up - 6 facts about random shit you didn’t know.
So I watched it. And for the millionth time, they showed why golf ball has dimples.
So I watched yet another video on it...
So, tell me oppo. If I put dimples all over a car, will it be faster? I think it might. But I don’t know if I want to commit my car to this experiment.
Need a running and driving beater to test theory.

EDIT: OK OK. I FOUND IT

Corbin Sparrow has dimples.

fascinating...
If we said tomorrow all cars get dimples to save fuel, least efficient space on car becomes glass. Remove glass for dimpled surface and replace with camera/screen... OY. What I hole i dug

Mythbusters did this and it worked. You can do better than uniform circles though and make parabolic indentations since cars always go forwards (well, at any significant speed).

Corbin, with even more dimples .......

I am simplifying it a bit, but I am guessing that the dimple creates a vortex of air that acts like a wheel. Wheel allows air to ride over it reducing air friction.
Maybe some trucks should get dimples... maybe amazon delivery trucks need dimples. I sell dimples. 10 for a dollar. 20 dimples for 3 dollars

why use a weird car? Why not beige camry like everyone else drives?

The Aptera did the most for aero efficiency, doing this gets you some serious range, they were going to make a four door at some point too, according to an interview I read.

I am guessing in this day and age, Tesla would benefit the most from this.

I was actually surprised they didn’t pick it up and make a small four door. The highway range on this thing could be pretty impressive now, things have progressed since then.

“...

“ Maybe some trucks should get dimples...”
I believe t his is why most pickup trucks get better mileage with the tailgate up.

One thing I did notice tho... those cars mythbusters and other experimented with - the dimples are pretty far apart. Unlike golf balls. Those have dimples right next to each other. I wonder if there is a big portion being overlooked.

I was thinking bigger - 18 wheelers etc.

They have done the dimples on the flat floors of race cars, I’m not sure if it’s worth it. I haven’t seen it lately.

I am guessing dimples are worth more on curved surface so attacking air rides on air wheels.
On straight surface, there isn’t much resistance

I wish they wouldn’t have gone under. :(

That’s not too far off, it’s all about getting the air to change from laminar flow to turbulent flow which helps to separate the air from the object and keep the air from “sticking” to the ball.
There are lots of aerodynamic
tricks
that can work, and you don’t necessarily get the biggest benefit from dimples. Fluid dynamics is mostly a dark art full of secret techniques and befuddling conclusions.

Vortex generators to reduce trailing drag, and modify or detach laminar flow.
A sphere that can present any aspect forward is a bit different than a vehicle that pretty much always presents a specific forward aspect.
Streamlining and a few strategic laminar flow spoilers... maybe a couple of tricks like a KAMM tail, or flowing air around or through the bodywork from a high-pressure area to a low pressure area, like a diffuser.
T he ultimate speed holes... like Ford GT and Lotus Evija... through the bodywork like swiss cheese.

I want some... can I get my c5 wrapped in dimples and see how much faster I can go?
Who makes custom wraps? And I don’t mean make my car look rusty type wraps.
